Student Worker Guide

Dress Code

Student employees are expected to dress appropriately while at work. Revealing or disheveled clothing are discouraged in any work environment. Remember, you are a representative of the Carl S. Swisher Library. When in doubt, err on the side of dressing conservatively.

Students may not wear:

  • Revealing/disheveled clothes
  • Hats or other headgear, except those required for religious or medical reasons
  • Crop tops
  • Anything that allows for exposed undergarments

Closed toed shoes are encouraged for safety reasons, but not required.

Students who report to work dressed in a manner that does not positively reflect the professionalism and commitment to service of the library will be asked to leave and change. Repeated offenses in a semester may result in termination.

Please consult your supervisor for dress code concerns or questions.

Please complete the "Dressing for Work Review". Once you have it completed, take a screen shot and send it to dsimpso8@ju.edu.

Time Sheets

Guidelines:

  • Fill out electronic timecards daily
  • Submit your timesheet for approval weekly by Friday
  • We cannot guarantee you will get paid if you send your timesheet in late
  • Timesheet training is linked below.

Scheduling

The library student employee schedule is set for the semester.

  • Each semester students must send their availability to the Circulation Services Manager to make the schedule
  • Scheduling is done through Sling
  • Students will be able to view their schedules in Sling at any time
  • Students may also trade shifts as needed through Sling

Breaks

Student employees are allowed a paid 15-minute break during a shift of 4 hours or longer. If a student works more than 6 consecutive hours during a shift, they must take an unpaid break or lunch of at least 30-minutes, and this break must be indicated on their timesheet.

Absences

If a student plans in advance to miss a shift, they must mark it as available in Sling at least 24 hours in advance. The student is responsible for the shift until it is covered by another student employee.

If a last-minute illness or emergency causes a student to miss a shift, they should call the Circulation Desk as soon as possible and email their supervisor. Failure to do both may result in termination from the library.

Three or more uncovered absences in a semester may result in termination.

One or more no-call no-shows (where the employee does not contact the supervisor within the duration of their scheduled shift) may result in termination.

Tardiness

If a student is not in the library at their scheduled start time, they must call and let a supervisor know that they are on their way. Three or more late arrivals in a semester may result in termination.

Conditional Employment

Students are reviewed each semester by their supervisor. Offers to return for the next semester are extended based on performance.
